Like all the legendary cities of America, the independent city of Baltimore in the state of Maryland is one that has humble beginnings. Although that is not so easy to understand when we look at the city today. This is because it has prospered beyond all imagination and is now one of the most developed in the United States. But, as earlier mentioned, there is always an enchanting history behind every American success.
The city’s modern history could be traced back to the 18th century when it was still under the colonial influence of Great Britain. As a matter of fact, the city was named after the Irish politician, Lord Baltimore. As it was common then, cities in the country were named after British aristocrats who also doubled as imperialists.
Within a short period of time, the city was able to establish itself as a great agricultural power with the cultivation of crops, especially sugarcane serving as the bedrock of the city’s economy. The city of Baltimore also played crucial roles in the independence of the United States from Great Britain, as it was also a place where the American Revolution was hatched and organized. The city was also instrumental in keeping the nation together as one in unity. It is important to know that the city was one where the Confederates faced considerable opposition. The Confederates called for the splitting of the Union. Perhaps without such patriotic acts, the United States would not have been one country as we know it to be today. No wonder a former US President referred to Baltimore as the Monumental City.
Today, the city is still in its way to higher progress, making giant strides all the way and impressing all. The city of Baltimore has a huge population of Black Americans and it is one of the few but unique political districts of the United States that is headed by a black female.
